So far, I've heard many stories of how my favorite storytellers became storytellers. A solid theme comes through all their stories about their beginnings: they all had a time when they could experiment with an audience.
They all had an opportunity to just tell stories again and again and again. Sometimes they were paid, sometimes not, but every great storyteller has had a period in their career when they got to tell at least once a week for at least a year.
